6th Yale Sumposium for olive oil and health. Herakleion, Crete

The NGO WINART, with its main mission to promote gender equality in the fields of art and culture, is actively participating in the 6th International Yale Symposium on Olive Oil and Health, presenting a unique photo installation that captures the journey of the olive from the harvest to the modern production of olive oil.

The exhibition combines traditional and contemporary elements, highlighting women as the central figure throughout the production chain: from manual labor in the olive groves to modern technology. Through the female perspective, the olive becomes a symbol of cultural heritage and, at the same time, a tool for promoting sustainability. Just as olives and olive oil contribute to the sustainability of the planet, which is one of the main themes of the conference, gender equality is also an essential condition for the sustainability of humanity itself. The images tell the story of the relationship between humans and nature, incorporating elements of everyday life and creativity, while also showcasing the power of women—both as workers and as artists—transforming the natural landscape into a work of sustainability and art. WINART’s President, Evgenia Kasparidou, commenting on the exhibition, said:

“The olive tree is not just a tree, but a symbol of life and culture. Through this photographic exhibition, we want to show that sustainability is not only about the environment but also about social balance. Gender equality is a key pillar for a sustainable future.”

The installation is hosted at the conference venue, inviting the audience into an artistic experience that bridges art with ecological and social consciousness. Through the synergy of tradition, culture, and modern approaches, the exhibition emphasizes that the olive is not only a fundamental element of Mediterranean identity but also a source of inspiration for a socially just, and thus sustainable, world.

WINART sincerely thanks the Olive and Oil Museum (Dermitzaki Folklore Collection) in Vatolakkos, Chania, for its significant contribution to the exhibition by lending two traditional items related to olive oil production. These items enriched the photo installation, connecting artistic creation with our rich cultural heritage. The generous support of the Museum highlights the power of collaboration in showcasing our tradition and culture.
